From a Glorious Mithila to a New Mithila
Adarsh Mithilanchal Development Forum is an initiative to reconnect the people of Mithila with the strength, prosperity and possibilities of their own land.
Mithila is not merely a geographical region. It is a civilisation with a remarkable intellectual, cultural and economic heritage. This is the land associated with Raja Janak, Mata Sita, Yajnavalkya, Vidyapati, Mandan Mishra and generations of scholars, artists and thinkers. Government records also recognise Darbhanga as the heart of Mithilanchal and highlight the region’s deep historical, cultural and literary heritage.
But our question today is simple:
If Mithila has such a glorious past, why are so many of its people still forced to leave Mithila in search of livelihood?
From a Centre of Opportunity to a Source of Labour
There was a time when Mithila had a much stronger local economic ecosystem. Agriculture, trade, traditional skills and industries created opportunities within the region. Historical records and research show the importance of trade networks and commercial activity in the wider Bihar region, while the industrial history of Mithila includes sugar, paper, cotton and other industries.
Industries such as sugar mills and paper mills once provided direct and indirect employment to thousands of families. The decline of many of these industries contributed to a situation in which people increasingly had to migrate outside the region for work. Research on Mithilanchal also documents how labour migration became deeply connected with the region’s changing economic conditions.
Today, we often see a painful contradiction:
Mithila has land, farmers, talent, culture, knowledge and natural resources — yet its people frequently have to travel to Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan and other parts of India to earn a living.
We believe this should not be accepted as the permanent destiny of Mithila.
We Don’t Want to Leave Mithila — We Want to Rebuild It
Adarsh Mithilanchal Development Forum was born from this thought.
Our objective is not simply to talk about the glorious past.
Our objective is to create a stronger future from the resources and potential that Mithila already possesses.
We want to awaken a new sense of enthusiasm, participation and entrepreneurship among the people of Mithila.
We want our farmers to see agriculture not merely as subsistence, but as an opportunity for value creation, processing, branding and sustainable income.
We want our youth to see Mithila not only as a place from which they must migrate, but also as a place where they can build careers, businesses and opportunities.
We want our traditional art, culture and local products to reach national and global markets.
And we want development to become a people’s movement, where government initiatives, community participation, private enterprise and local talent work together.
Rebuilding Mithila — Starting from What We Have
Mithila already has tremendous strengths.
Makhana, agriculture, fisheries, horticulture, Mithila/Madhubani painting, traditional knowledge, handicrafts, local entrepreneurship and a large pool of talented youth can become powerful engines of the regional economy. Government sources also identify Makhana, fish, mango and Madhubani painting among the region’s important attractions and economic-cultural assets.
Our initiatives will focus on identifying these opportunities and connecting them with awareness, technology, government-supported programmes, training, markets and community participation.
We are particularly interested in encouraging farmers towards high-value and alternative agricultural opportunities, including suitable medicinal and nutritional crops such as Shatavari, wherever scientifically and commercially appropriate and supported by relevant government or institutional programmes.
Our approach is simple:
Local Resources + Local People + Government Support + Modern Knowledge = New Opportunities for Mithila
Our Vision
We envision a Mithila where:
Farmers can earn better from their land.
Youth can find meaningful opportunities closer to home.
Local products can reach national and international markets.
Traditional art and culture can generate sustainable livelihoods.
Small businesses and entrepreneurs can grow.
Old industrial potential can be revived wherever economically and environmentally viable.
Government schemes and development programmes reach the people who need them.
People of Mithila living across India and abroad remain connected with the development of their homeland.
A New Awakening for Mithila
We believe the next transformation of Mithila cannot be achieved by one organisation, one leader or one government alone.
It will require all of us.
The farmer, the teacher, the doctor, the engineer, the entrepreneur, the artist, the student, the professional working outside Mithila, the businessman, the social worker and every person who still carries Mithila in their heart.
If you are reading this, you are already a part of this journey.
You don’t have to leave your work or profession.
You can contribute through your knowledge, network, ideas, investment, skills, time, technology or simply by creating awareness about the possibilities of Mithila.
Because rebuilding Mithila is not only about building roads, factories or businesses.
It is about rebuilding confidence in Mithila itself.
Let us move from:
“Mithila se bahar jaakar kya kar sakte hain?”
to
“Mithila mein kya-kya kiya ja sakta hai?”
Let us bring back the spirit of enterprise, self-confidence and collective development.
Join Us in Building a New Mithila
Mithila’s future cannot be built by waiting for someone else.
It will be built when we decide to participate.
Come forward. Share your ideas. Support local initiatives. Promote Mithila’s products. Encourage our farmers and youth. Connect people with opportunities. Help us identify what can be done and, most importantly, help us do it.
Together, let us make Mithila not just proud of its past, but confident about its future.
संवाद से समाज बदलेगा।
सहयोग से विकास होगा।
और मिलकर फिर से समृद्ध बनेगा मिथिला।
